New York City welcomes Apollo 11 crewmen in a showering of ticker tape down Broadway and Park Avenue in a parade termed as the largest in the city’s history on August 13, 1969. The theme for this week’s Antidote du Jour is the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon mission.

Today we also recognize the “eighth astronaut” Walter Cronkite, who passed away at the age of 92 in his New York home on Friday night. It’s sad that he didn’t get to see the 40th anniversarty broadcasts, since it was a moment in his career that he felt very deeply about. “Uncle Walter” was on the air for 27 of the 30 hours it took the Apollo astronauts to complete their mission, according to the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Today we recognize a milestone of 20th century history, and an iconic figure who was so much a part of the event, and whom we invited into our living rooms every night for over two decades.

This post is published at the exact time the Lunar Module touched down on the surface of the Moon 40 years ago at – 20:17 UTC
